QuickBlock v1.3.0 Released

QuickBlock v1.3.0 was released.

ChangeLog

  • You can now define up to 6 keyboard shortcuts to invoke block commands.

  • Each block command now has 2 modes:

    • Toggle mode: invoking it (1) blocks content types chosen in the options page if no content type is being blocked or (2) unblocks all content types if any content type is being blocked.

    • Non-toggle mode: invoking it blocks content types chosen in the options page regardless of the current blocking state.

QuickBlock User Guide

QuickBlock is a Chrome extension that allows you to quickly block images, scripts and plug-ins by clicking on the toolbar icon or by keyboard shortcuts. You can download QuickBlock from Chrome Web Store.

1. Usage

1.1. Toolbar icon

QuickBlock has two modes to work with the toolbar icon, namely "popup mode" (this is the default) and "one-click mode".

1.1.1. Popup mode

Click on the toolbar icon to bring up the popup and check/uncheck content types to block/unblock.

Currently blocked content types are indicated by text displayed on top of the toolbar icon ("I" for images, "S" for scripts and "P" for plug-ins).

It's important to note that all QuickBlock can do is overwrite your browser's content settings (chrome://settings/content) temporarily, so unblocking a content type after blocking it (or uninstalling QuickBlock) restores the original setting for that content type.

Clicking on the "Close" button or pressing the Esc key closes the popup.

Clicking on the "Clear" button unblocks all content types.

1.1.2. One-click mode

In one-click mode, clicking on the toolbar icon (1) blocks content types chosen in the options page if no content type is being blocked or (2) unblocks all content types if any content type is being blocked.

To enable/disable the one-click mode, check/uncheck "Enable one-click mode" and choose content types to block in the options page.

1.2. Keyboard shortcuts

You can define up to 6 shortcuts to invoke block commands.

To set up a block command, define a shortcut used to invoke the command in the extensions management page (chrome://extensions : scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Keyboard shortcuts") and choose content types to block in the options page.

If "Used as 'toggle' (ON/OFF) command" is checked, invoking that command (1) blocks content types chosen in the options page if no content type is being blocked or (2) unblocks all content types if any content type is being blocked in the same fashion as the one-click mode.

If "Used as 'toggle' (ON/OFF) command" is not checked, invoking that command blocks content types chosen in the options page regardless of the current blocking state.

As an example, here's my current setup (I use the browser's so-called "click-to-play" feature to defer the loading of plug-ins (choose "Let me choose when to run plugin content" in your browser's content settings page to enable it) instead of using QuickBlock):

Shortcut ON/OFF command Images Scripts Plug-ins
Ctrl+B
Ctrl+Shift+S
Ctrl+I
